Go to and select grant a wish! the perfect gifts are broken out for every taste including the "wood worker", "weekend warrior" or my favorite: "cool new tools" .. this is where i select gifts for the diy'ers in my family. my favorite gift so far, by the way? the accutrac laser measuring tool. it'll measure a distance up to 150 feet away to w/in 3/16 inch accuracy using a laser beam. i believe its on sale for around $80. second favorite - digital level with laser pointer. only $25, looks cool uses a cool green digital read out that turns over if you flip it upside down and beeps whenever you hit perfect level, or 45 degrees, so u don't have to look at it to tell when your spot on. Ahhh. the perfect question!

If he has woodworking books or videos, look through these and pick out something that would never make or challenge him and you would like in the house. Either get a set of plans of the piece (if he uses them) and a gift voucher for the wood and a challenge for him to have it by a certain date(i.e. your birthday) This way you both can enjoy the finished product. Once he gets into woodworking, he'll want to get them all and more. But for me, since you live in an apartment, I would get him a nice set of carving knives, gouges, rasps and or rifflers. With a good instruction video, he can be off and running from the start and with a minimum amount of mess in some corner. If he wants to build furniture, just look at how much is carved. And the satisfaction factor is almost instantaneous. Carving a relief is also a great present to give. If this is your choice, I recommend always get the best tools. They last longer, stay sharper and will be easier to work with. You can find some on line at Garrett Wade, it's a craftsman's paradise. Good luck to both of you.
