Good book for beginner woodworking?

Could someone, please, recommend me a good book (with clear instructions and pictures)? There are many good woodworking books, but first I’d like to suggest a magazine. Fine Woodworking magazine has a high cover price, but every issue is loaded with excellent how-to articles, tool reviews and lots of little tidbits of use to a beginning woodworker. The publisher of Fine Woodworking, Taunton publishes some of the best woodworking books, including a line of books that are compilations of magazine articles on specific subjects.
