What to buy first? Books on the subject and then simple hand tools at first until you build your skills. I’ll let you know that I never had a wood shop teacher in school that wasn’t missing a finger, so be safe.

Depends on what kind of woodworking you want to do. If you want to carve things like animals, or faces start out using a bar of soap or the core of a golf ball. They are hard to get into. but fairly soft to carve. Its also fun carving things out of fruit pits. Like peaces and cherries.
